Ed Ruscha

Born in 1937 in Omaha, Nebraska, Edward Ruscha was raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where his family moved in 1941. In 1956 he moved to Los Angeles to attend the Chouinard Art Institute, and had his first solo exhibition in 1963 at the Ferus Gallery. In 1973, Ruscha began showing his work with Leo Castelli Gallery in New York. He continues to live and work in Los Angeles, and currently shows with Gagosian Gallery. These two pieces of work (ripe and adios) were made in 1967.

I really like these two pieces of work as they remind me of summer time and have a sort of Mediterranean feel too then because the colours and materials Ruscha has used. I think that for the backgrounds of these pieces of work that they are oil painted canvases because of how the colours have blended and then Ruscha has used these to create the type on top. Ruscha uses oil on canvases in a lot of his work which gives a really unique element to his work.
